Dijon: Cathedral of St. Benin, building stages (Athena Review Image Archive)

This plan shows two main stages of cathedral construction between AD 1000-1500. The Romanesque phase (AD 1000-1200), shown in blue, included the rotunda and apse, transcept and ambulatory chapels, sanctuary, and a narrow nave, with a narthax added in the 12th century. The very earliest portion, including a small rectangle at upper left (purple), represents part of the the early 10th century abbey church.

The later Gothic phase of construction (AD 1200-1500), shown in orange, greatly enlarged the nave and used Gothic architectural methods to increase the overall height of the structure.
