Section of The Peutinger Table (photo: R. Ivanov).

The Peutinger Table, or Tabula Peutingeriana, is a map of the entire Roman Empire including towns, rivers, and roads. Originally dating from the 3rd century AD, it is now preserved in a 14th century copy.

The section shown here includes an area of the lower Danube region containing the Roman sites of Durostorum and Novae. Novae is shown as "Novas," while Durostorum. is shown as "Durostero" (both are at the middle right of the map). North of the Danube is recorded a continuous belt of Sarmatian settlements ("Venadi Sarmatae").
