Lower Danube: Plan of the Baths at Durostorum
Baths in the canabae at Durostorum, and residential buildings to the south (after P. Donevski 1990). | ||
The
remains of Roman Durostorum lie beneath the center of modern-day
Silistra, making it difficult to carry out archaeological excavations
at the site. Investigations led by P. Donevski from 1972 to 1981
succeeded in locating and partially revealing the layout of the ancient
legionary camp, or castra. Six periods of construction are indicated
between the 2nd and 4th centuries AD, as shown in this figure. While
relatively little information is available on the earliest building
phase, the fortification system has been studied in several areas.
Initially the wall was about 1.50 m thick and was reinforced with inner
rectangular towers. |
