St-Etienne-le-Vieux was first built in the 10th century AD as a Romanesque monastic chapel. It was first recorded in 1066. By then it was called old St. Etienne, compared to the newer church at the adjacent Abbaye aux Hommes, also dedicated to St. Etienne.

The original church was destroyed by English sieges of 1346 and 1417, then rebuilt in Gothic style in the 15th century. During the French Revolution it was used as a stable. It was saved from demolition in 1844, then bombed in World War II. It has now been preserved as a historic ruin and public monument near the center of Caen.
