St-Martin-de-Fontenay: Merovingian fibulae (Caen Mus.Normandie; photo Athena Review 2013)

These fibulae from 6th century burials at Giberville and St-Martin-de-Fontenay are made of cast gilded silver, inlaid with garnets in cloisonne. The upper fibula has three claw-like segments with indentations attached to the three outer garnet compartments, around a larger central garnet.

In the fibula at bottom, a wheel-like effect has been created, with four small openings between four outer garnets and a central green stone.

Giberville is located 2 miles east of Caen, on the east bank of the Orne River. St-Martin-de-Fontenay is located six miles (10 km) south of Caen.
