St.Martin-de-Fontenay: Merovingian fibulae (5th-6th c.AD)

St-Martin-de-Fontenay: Merovingian fibulae (Caen Mus.Normandie; photo Athena Review 2013)

These two wheel-shaped Merovingian fibulae with garnet cloisonne are from St-Martin-de-Fontenay, located six miles (10 km) south of Caen. The earlier fibula at top, from a late 5th century burial in the St-Martin-de-Fontenay necropolis, is made of silver and iron inlaid brass with garnet cloisonne.

The better-preserved, 6th century fibula at bottom is gilded silver with garnet cloisonee. The beaded filigree decoration in the form of two figure 8s in the lower, 6th century example shows especially fine metalworking skills.
