Lisieux: Glass cinerary urns from Gallo-Roman necropolis (3rd-4th c.AD)

Lisieux: Gallo-Roman glass cinerary urns (Caen Mus.Normandie; photo Athena Review 2013)

In the late Roman period (3rd-4th c AD), Lisieux was settled by auxiliary troops or laeti from Germania and their families. Their graves are included in the Michelet necropolis, with artifacts, including glassware, typical of northern Germania.

The cinerary urn at left has a rounded, wide-neck form. That at right has a narrow neck with squared strap handles, showing similarities to glass urns manufactured at Late Roman workshops in Cologne.

Lisieux, located about 25 miles (40 km) east of Caen, was occupied from the 1st century AD onward by Roman settlements, and has necropoli dating from several periods.
