Jort: Terra sigillata vase (Caen Mus.Normandie; photo Athena Review 2013)

Located on a Roman road 25 km southeast of Caen, Jort had a Gallo-Roman settlement in the 1st - 3rd centures AD. It included a military station and had a temple of Mithras, a deity popular with legionaries.

Terra sigillata is a fine paste ware with mold-made designs. This vase is stamped BUTRIO, the name of the master potter in a workshop in Lezoux in Puy-le-Dome, active in the early 2nd century AD.
