Frenouville: Decorated Gallo-Roman bronze buckles

Frenouville: Gallo-Roman bronze buckles (Caen Mus.Normandie; photo Athena Review 2013)

These three bronze buckles were found in burials at Frenouville, 8 km southeast of Caen, near a Roman villa. The buckles show good preservation of engraved and hammered decoration, with considerable skill displayed in the metalworking. They belong to the late Roman period (4th-5th century AD).

The Frenouville necropoli or burial grounds, used until the 7th century AD, show remarkable continuity between the Late Roman and Early Medieval (Merovingian or Frankish) periods, according to excavator Jean Pilet (1980).

The Merovingian period began with the capture of northern France by the Frankish  ruler Clovis. In Normandy this occurred in AD 487 when Syagrius, the last Roman ruler, was conquered.
