Dedication of the 20th Legion at High Rochester (RIB 1284)

High Rochester (RIB 1284; Museum of Antiquities, Newcastle-upon-Tyne).

This 3rd century AD dedication plaque found at High Rochester (Roman Bremenium) in northern England is flanked by relief carvings. At left Mars, the Roman war god, brandishes a spear, while at right the mythological hero Hercules holds his club. At bottom is a running boar, symbol of the 20th Legion.

The inscription (with typical abbreviations) reads as follows: "A detachment [Vexillation] of the Twentieth legion Valeria Victrix built this."
