Baalbek: Temple of Venus, viewed from side (photo 1892)

Baalbek, Temple of Venus viewed from side (photo: Frauberger 1892)

This 1892 photo by Frauberger shows the Temple of Venus from the southwest. There are niche-like recesses in each of the five concave sections of this circular temple, which once held statues.  The temple was completed in AD 220 during the brief reign of the Severan emperor Elegabalus (218-222 AD), who born in Syria.

Frauberger's photographs are contained in his 1892 book, The Acropolis at Baalbek.
