Baalbek: Temple of Venus (photo 1857)

Baalbek, Temple of Venus (photo: Frith 1857/Goodyear Archive Bn )

This 1857 photo by Francis Frith shows the Temple of Venus from the southeast. Plainly seen are two of the concave sections with Corinthian columns of this small, unique circular temple, built ca. AD 220 during the reign of the Severan emperor Elegabalus.

Prints from Frith's photos of Baalbek are in the Goodyear Archive at the Brooklyn Museum.
