Baalbek, Temple of Jupiter, standing columns (photo 1892)

Baalbek, Temples of Jupiter columns (photo: Frauberger 1892)

This 1892 photo by Heinrich Frauberger, looking north toward the southern exterior wall of the Temple of Jupiter, provides a clear view of the surviving Corinthian capitals and entablature on the set of six massive standing columns. The entablature has a frieze with reliefs of alternating bulls' and lions' heads, connected by garlands.

Also seen is the masonry of the substructure under the colonnade. The temple, built in the first century AD, was reached by a monumental stairway rising nearly nine meters above the surrounding courtyard.

The photo is from the 1892 book by Frauberger, entitled The Acropolis at Baalbek.
