Baalbek, Temple of Jupiter, lion head on entablature (photo 1892)

Baalbek, Temple of Jupiter, lion's head on entablature (photo: Frauberger 1892)

This 1892 photo by Heinrich Frauberger shows a detail of the entablature relief over the columns of the Temple of Jupiter, with a lion head surrounded by garlands. The lion heads alternated with bulls heads (bucrania) in the frieze.  This section of the entablature had fallen to the ground, likely from the 1759 earthquake.
