Baalbek, Temples of Jupiter and Bacchus (photo 1857)

Baalbek, Temples of Jupiter and Bacchus (Frith 1857/ Eastman Archive)

This 1857 photo by Frith, taken from the south, shows the Temple of Jupiter at left and the Temple of Bacchus at right. This is essentially the same view as shown in the 1757 drawing  by Wood, except that there are only six columns of the Temple of Jupiter seen in this view as opposed to the nine in Wood's drawing (with three of the columns lost to the 1759 earthquake).

The Temple of Bacchus, meanwhile, remains, to this day, one of the best preserved Roman temples in the Near East.

Prints from the early photographs of Baalbek by Frith are in the Eastman Archive.
