Baalbek: Propylea, left tower (1892 photo)

Baalbek: Propylea, tower on left side (Frauberger 1892, Tab.8/Goodyear Archive 52)

The Propylaeae or gates of the temple of Jupiter in Baalbek was completed in the first half of the third century AD. They consist of a monumental staircase, leading to the terrace, and a portico 50 by 12 meters in area, with twelve tall columns of Egyptian granite. Three of the column bases have inscriptions that mention the emperor Caracalla.

To the north and south of the staircase were two towers overlooking the Hexagonal court, the remains of one of which is shown in this 1892 photo by Frauberger.
