Autun: Gallo-Roman goblet of terra sigillata from Lezoux

Autun: Terra sigillata goblet (Musee Rolin; photo Athena Review 2012)

This fragment of a mould-made, decorated goblet with a metallic sheen was found in 1984 excavations at 11 rue du Chatelet in Autun. It is a variant of terra sigillata, a fine paste pottery derived from Italian Arretine Ware, and mass-produced at workshops in Gaul.

The pot (inv. 86.3) was made in the early 2nd century AD  at the Atelier of Lezoux, in Puy-le-Dome, by the master potters Libertus and Butrio. Decoration includes figures of Hercules and other deities, amid repeated motifs of braziers and altars.
