Autun: Gallo-Roman relief of athletic man's face

Autun: Gallo-Roman relief of man's face (Musee Rolin; photo Athena Review 2012)

This relief fragment, carved in schist, is part of a decorated wall or veneer. The style of relief carving of the face, as well as the type of stone, both show a resemblance to another carving in the Musee Rolin of an athlete or wrestler.

This relief fragment (inv.278) was recovered on the outskirts of Autun in 1882, and was part of the wall decoration of a house or villa.
