Autun: Gallo-Roman signboard of a food merchant

Autun: Gallo-Roman merchant's signboard (Musee Rolin; photo Athena Review 2012)

This limestone relief carving was used as a signboard for a food seller in ancient  Augustodunum (Autun). While much detail is worn away, a man behind a counter can be seen facing a younger man carrying a sack at left, either a customer or assistant.

The relief (inv. 985.1)was found during 1985 excavations at rue de la grille in Autun. It dates from the 1st-3rd centuries AD.
