Autun: Mosaic of Metrodorus (Musee Rolin; photo Athena Review 2012)

This mosaic from the House of the Greek Authors in Autun shows a portrait of Metrodorus, a 2nd century AD follower of the Greek philosopher Epicurus.

The Greek inscription, as identified (Sententiae Vaticanae 14) and translated, reads:

"We have been born once and there can be no second birth. For all eternity we shall no longer be. But you, although you are not master of tomorrow, are postponing your happiness.  We waste away our lives in delaying, and each of us dies without having enjoyed leisure."

The mosaic is dated at the late 2nd century BC.
