Autun: Gallo-Roman Pillar of the Four Gods: Mercury

Autun: Gallo-Roman sculpture of Mercury (Musee Rolin; photo Athena Review 2012)

Four-sided sculptures of deities are known from several Gallo-Roman sites, notably including Paris (Roman Lutetia), at the temple site that underlies Notre Dame Cathedral.

This limestone example from Autun (inv. 1634), 66 cm high, was found in 1979 in excavations at the corner of rue de la Grille and rue de la Grange-vertu.

This aspect shows the Gallo-Roman version of Mercury, god of commerce, in a niche with pilasters. Mercury, according to Caesar's 1st century BC account Commentario de Bello Gallico, was the most popular deity in Gaul. Other gods on the pillar are Fortuna, Mars, and Hercules.
