Autun: Gallo-Roman grave inscription (Musee Rolin; photo Athena Review 2012)


This grave  inscription (inv. 1290), dedicated to a woman named Eufronia, is from a marble Gallo-Roman sarcophogus dating from the 3rd-4th centry AD. It was found in Saint-Pierre L'Estrier in Autun.

The Latin inscription. when translated, reads:

"Eufronia, daughter of ... and ..., died during a shipwreck; she was born on the eve of the Kalends of November [Oct. 31], she received baptism on the eve of the Ides of  April [April 11]; she died on the eve of the Kalends of May [April 30]."
