Autun: Gallo-Roman grave stela of a wine merchant

Autun: Gallo-Roman grave stela of wine merchant (Musee Rolin; photo Athena Review 2012)

This sandstone stela, found in the Bois Saint-Jean of Autun in the 19th century, shows a man carrying a small wine cask on his left shoulder, and a loaf of bread or baguette in his right hand. The stela is 47 cm high and 50 cm wide.

While the carving lacks an inscription, it is interpreted as the grave stela of a vintner or wine merchant, one of several grave stele from Autun showing trades or occupations. This grave stela (inv. 849) is dated from the 1st-3rd century AD.
