Autun: Gallo-Roman grave stela of a shoemaker

Autun: Gallo-Roman grave stela of shoemaker (Musee Rolin; photo Athena Review 2012)

This sandstone relief carving from Champ St-Roch in Autun shows a man with a hammer and set of foot calipers, tools of the shoemakers trade. Depictions of the tools of specific crafts are very common in the grave stelae of Gallo-Roman artisans.

The inscription at top reads: D.M. SABINIANI MINUONIS. This grave stela (inv. 143) is dated from the 1st-3rd century AD.
