Autun: Gallo-Roman Pillar of the Four Gods: Fortuna

Autun: Gallo-Roman sculpture of Fortuna (Musee Rolin; photo Athena Review 2012)

Four-sided sculptures of deities are known from several Gallo-Roman sites, notably including Paris (Roman Lutetia), at the temple site that underlies Notre Dame Cathedral. This limestone example from Autun (inv. 1634), 66 cm high, was found in 1979 in excavations at the corner of rue de la Grille and rue de la Grange-vertu.

This side of the monument shows the goddess Fortuna in an alcove with a scalloped ceiling, holding a cornucopia or horn of plenty in her left arm. Other gods on the pillar are Mercury, Mars, and Hercules.
