Autun: Gallo-Roman figurine head of a woman

Autun: Gallo-Roman figurine of woman (Musee Rolin; photo Athena Review 2012)

This figurine fragment of white terracotta (inv. 2433), 8 cm in height, consisting of the neck and head of a woman, is of unknown provenience. It has been identified, however, as coming from a figurine workshop in central Gaul, where it was made in the 2nd century AD.

The distinctive hairstyle of the figurine, of which the top part is missing,  is a diadem-like arrangement composed of small triangles, probably reflecting some feminine hairstyles of the time.
