Autun: Gallo-Roman figurine head of a young child, by Pistillus

Autun: Figurine of child by Pistillus (Musee Rolin; photo Athena Review 2012)

This figurine fragment of white terracotta (inv. 1601), showing the head and neck of a young child, was made in the workshop of Pistillus in a northern suburb of Autun. The hairstyle is relatively informal, in contrast to that of another figurine of a child by Pistillus in the Musee Rolin (inv.1567).

The figurine dates from active period of the workshop, from the late 2nd to early 3rd century AD. The find spot or provenience, however, of this figurine  is unknown.
