Autun: Gallo-Roman mold and figurine of Sucellus by Pistillus

Autun: Mold and figurine of Sucellus by Pistillus (Musee Rolin; photo Athena Review 2012)

This clay figurine cast shows Sucellus, the Gallic Hammer God, seated with a long-handled mallet in his left hand, and a jar or goblet in his right hand, similar to the pose in a sandstone stela from Autun.

The mold at left from which the cast was made is signed by Pistillus, the Aeduan master potter who ran a large, successful pottery workshop in Autun in the late 2nd- early 3rd centuries AD.
