Autun: Figurine and mold of Nursing Goddess by Pistillus

Autun: mold and figurine of Nursing Goddess by Pistillus (Musee Rolin; photo Athena Review 2012)

The mold at left is signed on the back PISTILLUS, from the 2nd century AD atelier of Pistillus, one of the best-known workshops in Gaul producing figurines. In 2010, the actual workshop was discovered in excavations in Arroux, a northern suburb of Autun.

At right is the figurine created by the positive cast from the mould, showing the seated Goddess of Nursing, holding two babies. This kind of figurine was produced in quantity by Pistillus and other workshops, often for use in ex-voto offerings.
