Autun: Gallo-Roman Tragic Mask

Autun: Gallo-Roman tragic mask (Musee Rolin; photo Athena Review 2012)

This small, fragmentary tragic mask (oscillum), made of marble, was probably part of a theater decoration, of unknown provenience. It resembles a complete tragic mask from the Roman theater at Orange in the Rhone Valley of Provence.

The dimensions of the mask (inv. 918) are 12 by 8 cm. It dates from the 1st-3rd century AD.
