Autun: Cathedral of Saint-Lazare, Last Judgment scene (detail, right)

Autun: Detail of Last Judgment by Gislebertus (photo: Athena Review 2012)

The tympaneum over the main portal of the Cathedral of Saint Lazare holds a Last Judgment scene with a large figure of Christ at the center. This unique statuary group was created in the early 12th century (AD 1120-1135) by the master sculptor named Gislebertus.

This image gives a detailed view of the right side of the relief composition. In the center of this side of the tympaneum is the figure of a scale, weighing the hearts of the dead, as part of the Last Judgment. On the left side of the scale is an angel; on  the right, a demon.

This is an early example of Last Judgment scenes, which became typical of the tympaneum sculpture of Gothic cathedrals in the period of about 1200-1400 AD, placed over their central, western portals.
