Autun: Cathedral of Saint-Lazare, nave, pilaster capital

Autun: Cathedral of Saint-Lazare, nave capital (photo: Athena Review 2012)

The Cathedral of Saint-Lazare was begun in AD 1120, and the structure was consecrated in 1130. This view of the nave shows a pilaster capital with a floral motif, installed about a century later in 1220 AD.

This well-executed openwork relief capital, with a Corinithian-like floral motif, represents a transition between Romanesque and Gothic sculptural styles.
