Chloroplast of green leaf cell

Chloroplast of a green leaf cell (image:.)

The chloroplast found in green leaf cells is an organelle with its own DNA and a surrounding membrane. It is dedicated to producing photosynthesis, done by capturing light photons with chlorophyll pigment contained in the folded tissue called thallakoids.

The photons, serving as hydrogen ions, then pass through two successive chemical processes called the Light and Dark Reactions, to produce the ATP (adenine tri-phosphate) used in plant metabolism.
