Faunal Assemblage Zones in the Beaufort Group of South Africa (after ) | ||
The Beaufort Group in the Karoo Basin of South Africa is one of the world's richest areas of fossil recoveries, with extensive exposures of Permian through Jurassic formations. The geological strata have been associated with a series of faunal assemblage zones named for commonly found taxa, which serve as index fossils. These are especially valuable for a wide range of Late Permian synapsids and other fauna which became extinct in the end-of-Permian extinction event at ca. 252-250 mya. This map shows color-coded locations of the faunal assemblage zones of the Beaufort Group.Reference: |
