Amia calva (bowfin) skull with individual bones labelled. Bowfin are bony fish related to gars in the infraclass Holostei. They are the only surviving species of the order Amiiformes, dating from the Jurassic and common through the Eocene, persisting to the present. Bowfin have retained some morphological characteristics of their early ancestors.
